Il Mugello: how to reach us, info about the Mugello Area.

LOCATION

Our apartments are located in the square of Pagliana, a small rural village at 720 msl., 6 km from the Futa Pass and from Firenzuola in the northern part of Tuscany. The village has a beautiful, sunny position with the Apennine mountains in the background, surrounded by large extents of fields and meadows sloping down to the river Santerno.

MUGELLO – the northern part of Tuscany

Pleasant landscape, lovable people, genuine food and good wine.

The MUGELLO region is surrounded by oaks and chestnut trees and defended by the Apennine mountains. It has the gentle, soft landscape typical for Tuscany; it has the atmosphere and the beautiful light.
A landscape of extraordinary colours, source of inspiration for painters and artists. Famous Tuscans as Giotto,  Fra Angelico and Andrea del Castagno were born here.  Also the Medici family was originated from here, and there are still many signs left by these powerful persons. They called important architects as Michelozzo, to build and to modify castles in order to turn them into pleasant abodes. The castle of Cafaggiolo and the castle of Trebbio are two magnificent examples. 
 Discover the ancient and winding roads of the Apennines. Enjoy the imposing and stately landscape, making opportune standstills, without hurry. Stop to taste the chestnuts or the mushrooms. Fields of wheat and olives will change into a nearly Alpine panorama as you go north towards the High Mugello.

FIRENZUOLA

Firenzuola, which means "little Florence", has been contended from the beginning of the 20th century by the domains of Tuscany and Romagna. The town was built during the first half of 1300 by the district of Florence to oppose the powerful Ubaldini family. The town walls were built in the Middle Ages and are still visible today.
The city became an independent district in the 14th century, a few years after the opening of the Giogo Pass. The new road to Florence contributed in the prosperity of the town as travellers coming from north passed by here. In the 15th century it was rebuilt  by Lorenzo the Magnificent and for a certain period it was also governed by Niccolò Machiavelli.
During the Second World War, Firenzuola was seriously damaged and successively rebuilt.
Firenzuola is today one of the districts of the High Mugello, in the north of Tuscany. It is an interesting medieval village situated in a green valley of the Apennine mountains where the icy waters of the Santerno river flow.
